Special Golf Vacations - Celtic Manor Resort, The Manor House, Usk Valley, South Wales.

This former Victorian mansion, which for many years in the last century was a maternity hospital, became the original Celtic Manor Hotel in 1982 and won the Egon Ronay award for best hotel in Wales in five consecutive years.

The Manor is a beautiful sandstone building with the original Georgian lead windows, wooden panelled walls and sweeping wooden staircase adorned with a backdrop of leadlight glass. Ornate ceiling plasterwork is complemented with the traditional English style country interior.

A roaring fire is available in winter in both the Lounge Bar and Sitting room and allow guests to relax and have a drink prior to dinner in the Patio Brasserie.

With the completion of a £100m expansion programme in 1999, the focus moved to the new hotel and convention centre. However, the Manor House has remained popular and has 66 traditionally styled bedrooms with a country house feel.

The sports bar boasts 4 plasma screens and the Italian Restaurant offers excellent cuisine. For those looking to ‘explore’ a bit more, the village of Caerleon is only a 5 minute taxi ride and offers a good choice of pubs, restaurants and a great Curry House.

Use of the Resorts health club and spa:

  • Europe's largest 50-seater free form spa bath
  • 16 treatment rooms
  • Gym
  • Swimming pool, Sauna, steam room, spa pool, plunge pools, Jacuzzi and much, much more

Roman Road.

Roman Road, the first of the Resort’s courses, opened in 1995 and was ranked ‘the top inland course in Wales’ by Golf Monthly Magazine.  Overlooking the Severn Estuary with views across to Somerset and Devon, it was designed by Robert Trent Jones Snr and is named after the many Roman roads that criss-cross it, the design shaped to avoid disrupting any remains.

The Roman Road course was the host venue in 2005 and 2006 for both The Celtic Manor Wales Open and the star-studded All *Star Cup.

Montgomerie Course

Designed by Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomeie, the course measures 6,371 yards and has a par of 69. The front nine takes as its framework the starting and closing holes of the old Wentwood Hills championship course which were not part of the plans for the new course for The Ryder Cup. The back nine has been created from scratch on land that previously housed the 18-hole Coldra Woods academy course.

Throughout the new course, Montgomerie has put his own stamp on the layout. A traditionalist in design terms, the eight-time European No 1 has added deep pot bunkers to give the course a linksy look.

Spectacular views abound with dramatic tee shots over valleys and breathtaking downhill shots. Two long par fives, a number of short par fours and several testing par threes all add up to an exciting and rewarding challenge.
